On Saturday, September 15, 2018, the New Museum and The Bentway presented IdeasCity Toronto. The daylong event brought together cultural innovators and creative practitioners from Toronto and beyond to reflect on Toronto as a City of Cities–a web of highly individual neighborhoods united by a singular municipality.
IdeasCity Toronto was free and open to the public, and began with a performance of The Solution Mat by Vanessa Brazeau and The Central Toronto Wrestling Club. Following a Land Acknowledgment by Philip Cote and a Welcome Address by Hon. David Crombie, V. Mitch McEwen moderated a panel discussion on amalgamation, identity, and surveillance featuring Simone Browne, Sylvia McAdam Saysewahum, and Rt. Hon. Adrienne Clarkson.
Strategies for the City participatory workshops were held by Betty Yu (Chinatown Art Brigade), Bryan C. Lee (Colloqate Design), Nadine Villasin Feldman and Josh Dyer (Myseum of Toronto), Design Exchange, and The Samara Centre for Democracy.
Six projects inspiring creative interventions across the city: Anda, ArtNoir, Arts Etobicoke, Connected, Urban Dock, and Sinead Petrasek’s Toronto Vs. pitched their visions for the future of Toronto to a panel of experts including Adil Dhalia, Sara Diamond, Vere van Gool, Ken Greenberg, and Vikash Jain.
In a keynote conversation, Rick Lowe and Sharifa Rhode Pitts discussed the history of Black Wall Street and the economy of community.
The evening culminated with The Greatest T-Dot Hip Hop Music Video Rap Along, an interactive film celebrating twenty years of Toronto’s music culture curated by Supafrik, hosted by Master T and Michie Mee.
IdeasCity Toronto took place at The Bentway, a unique and innovative public space that transforms 1.75km underneath Toronto’s Gardiner Expressway into a new gathering place for the city.
