Ideas City New York, free and open to the public, took place September 16, 2017, at Sara D. Roosevelt Park, one block from the New Museum.

Highlights of IdeasCity New York included David Byrne’s “Reasons to be Cheerful,” a conversation with Kemi Ilesanmi on community building, a livestream from Spacebuster, Trevor Paglen’s research on surveillance, Rasmus Nielsen of Superflex, and Mel Chin’s presentation of his most recent work. Additional speakers included Alexandra Bell, Tatiana Bilbao, Majora Carter, Cezanne Charles, Nadina Christopoulou, Teddy Cruz and Fonna Forman, Eva Franch I Gilabert, Julien Frydman, Justin Garrett Moore, Rosanne Haggerty, dream hampton, Leslie Koch, Eric Liu, Mil M2, MTL+, Paul Ramírez Jonas, Jonathan Rose, and Henriette Waal, as well as a panel of mayors including Ras Baraka of Newark, Gregor Robertson of Vancouver, and Maurice Cox, former mayor of Charlottesville, VA, moderated by Majora Carter.

In conjunction with programming on the Forum Stage, a series of workshops, debates, and panel discussions were held on-site, including a workshop by Decolonize This Place; a panel discussion on cooperative real estate with NYC REIC, Dahkil Hausif of Ecovillagers Cooperative, and Nat Roe of Flux Factory, organized by Fei Liu; Black Gotham walking tours led by Kamau Ware; a collective publication compiled by Manolis Daskalakis-Lemos; Streetmix by Lou Hang presented by NEW INC; a conversation on the future of food organized by Ghetto Gastro, with Angela Dimayuga of Mission Chinese, Tanya Fields of the BLK ProjeK, Chef JJ Johnson of Ingrained Hospitality, and LinYee Yuan of MOLD Magazine, moderated by Jeff Gordinier; a talk on art as defiance with Joeonna Bellorado-Samuels of We Buy Gold, Hawa Jaan of Browntourage, Ja’Tovia Gary of New Negress Film Society, and Tsige Tafesse of BUFU, organized by Sasha Bonet, Danielle Roasles, and Adeola Naomi Aderemi of Distiguished Diva; a workshop on how to run for mayor by Ingrid LaFleur; a dialogue between Joe Ahearn of Clocktower Radio, Ryan Watson and Carrie Salter of North Brooklyn Farms, Francois Vaxelaire of the Lot Radio; a conversation on Chinatown between Robert Lee and Mei Lum, and a performance by Paolo Patelli and Giuditta VendrameBenedict Clouette, Justin Garrett Moore, Naomi Hersson-Ringskog, Marcelo López-Dinardi, Alejandra Navarrete, Gabby Printz, Violet Whitney, Lindsey Wikstrom, Bika Rebek, and Dong-Ping Wong participated in Columbia University’s GSAPP debates.

In addition, IdeasCity New York presented programs with the Architectural League, Bowery Poetry Club, Cooper Union, the Drawing Center, Storefront for Art and Architecture, Clocktower Radio, Columbia University’s GSAPP, GrowNYC, Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater, Lower East Side Ecology Center, North Brooklyn Farms, Van Alen Institute, the New Museum’s Department of Education and Public Engagement, NEW INC, and New Museum affiliate Rhizome.

An array of food tents helmed by Ghetto Gastro and Hester Street Fair were stationed along Rivington Street, one block from the festival.

IdeasCity is the New Museum’s civic platform that explores the future of cities with art and culture as a driving force.
